As the water swelled below, she stood atop the cliff pondering. Dreaming.
Wishing.
Where had it all gone so wrong? I thought I knew what I wanted. Dammit. I was more certain this was it for me. The end.
The grand finale. Nothing would ever
bring me greater pleasure than he had. And
this ring-this ring? Totally meaningless. Wait..where the fuck did it go? Whatever.
I don’t care. Let the earth
swallow it up whole.
The sky grew darker as the clouds drew in; the air
temperature dropped dramatically, making her shudder and draw her sweater tightly
around her thin-framed shoulders. An
audible howl resonated around the woman as she inched closer to the cliff, toes
unintentionally propelling pebbles over the edge.
Ha! What a perfect
symbol of where my life is at this exact moment-hurdling over the cliff, tumbling
to its ultimate demise into a faceless abyss.
Even mother nature is telling me life as I knew it is over.
An ominous green hue enveloped the atmosphere as the rain began...slowly at first. A gentle mist. Just enough to bring a chill to the woman’s bones.
I can’t do it anymore.
I can’t take it. This world isn’t
for me. This life isn’t for me.
Warm, salty tears combined with the cool raindrops, seeking
refuge on her cheeks-rosy from the now biting wind. With just a moment’s hesitation the woman
stepped forward, one foot hovering above the vast expanse of emptiness. Her heart pounded in her chest and ears,
throat growing tight, making the ability to swallow non-existent. Sobbing to the point of near hysteria, the
woman closed her eyes, mumbled a final goodbye and stepped forward.
Something caught under her foot, sending her flailing
backwards, landing with a thud on her backside.
At that exact moment, like some a message from fate itself, the sun
peaked through the clouds. Long beams of
light filtered through the dark masses, sending them off into the
distance.
And tears, large, fat tears of laughter streamed
down the woman’s face as she reached down and there, under her leg, was the
once lost symbol of her old life-that bit of infinity that wasn’t actually
infinite at all.
The woman with locks of lavender simply had to smile; what
nearly brought her to her ultimate demise, in turn, allowed her to see yet
another day.
